The beach
I LOVE the beach. The beach is my happy place. At the beach I feel a sense of freedom, I don't feel anywhere else. It is so easy to reflect and meditate while in the water staring at the horizon. The ocean is, to me, a symbol of God's power and strength.
I was saddened when I read that in the book of Revelation, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea."
"Sea" and "ocean" are often used interchangeably in English translations of the Bible.
Let it not be so...
In biblical and ancient thought, the sea or ocean often symbolized chaos and disorder; the sea was seen as a place of danger, unpredictability, and rebellion against God (e.g., the chaotic waters) in Genesis 1:2, The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
or the sea as a source of evil in Daniel's vision 7:3 "And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another."
Seas/oceans divided peoples and lands, representing barriers or hostility.
Unlike the stable land, the sea was untamed and threatening.
Is it possible that in Revelation 21:1, the absence of the sea/ocean symbolizes the removal of chaos, evil, and disorder in the new creation, where God’s order and peace reign fully. The end of separation, as all nations and peoples are united in God’s presence , Revelation 21:24-26. A creation free from the threats or instability the sea represented.
Maybe the verse is not about the literal absence of all large bodies of water but rather the omission of what the sea represents—chaos, division, and danger.
A perfected creation free from the negative associations of the sea.
........
Beneath the heavens, wide and blue,
Its waves, a chorus, rise and fall,
Proclaiming Christ, the Lord of all.
Each crest that crashes, bold and free,
Speaks of His strength, His majesty.
The deep, where shadows softly dwell,
Holds secrets only God can tell.
He spoke, and seas were set in place,
The tides obey His sovereign hand,
When storms arise and tempests roar,
His voice commands, “Be still, no more.”
The waters calm, the winds abide,
In Jesus’ peace, our souls reside.
O ocean vast, your boundless song,
Lifts praise to God, who we adore.
In every wave, His love is shown,
Our Savior reigns, forever more.
I can't wait! Praise God!
