Seeing the correlation between the Tower of Babble and what occurred at Pentecost.
Genesis 11:1-9 NKJV 11 “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.
3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.
7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.”
In Genesis, we see the people were of one accord. It was one accord to make a name for themselves, not for God. Proverbs 16: 8 NKJV says “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”
We know that God wants us to be in unity or one accord. Ephesians 4:5-6 NKJV says “one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” This shows us God’s desire to be one with him, even as Jesus also said in John 17:21 “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” There is a great chasm in the church today, but we will discuss that later.
It was at the Tower of Babble that God confused their language because of their pride and deliberate separation from God. We now fast-forward to the day of Pentecost. We see prophesy being fulfilled from Joel 2:28-30: 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants. I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.”
And for the first time since the Tower of Babble, men from all nations speaking different languages, would hear one another speaking in their own language. We see this in Acts 2:1-6 NKJV “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.”
Once again, the people were all together and they were all in one accord.
Yet, this time, they were not there to make a name for themselves, but to proclaim the name of Jesus; King of Kings; Lord of Lords.
